Moneikos, based in Monaco, was launched in June 2006 as a replacement for the previous Moneikos, now called Dakota.
The name Moneikos may refer to the Greek word Monoikos, often considered the origin of the current name of Monaco. Monoikos was the name of the 6th century BC colony of Phoceans from Massalia, today Marseilles, who settled Monaco. Phocea, near modern day Izmir in Turkey, was, in turn, at that time colonised by the Greeks, which explains the Greek name. Hercules was said to have passed through Monoikos on his travels, and in this area he was known as Hercules Monoikos. Port Hercule still bears his name. Julius Caesar also passed through Monaco, which the Romans called Monœcus…

Arcadia, the instant classic from Royal Huisman, designed by Tony Castro, has been winning plaudits from the critics since her launch earlier this year. Eschewing the bigger-is-better philosophy, the new owner, an experienced American yachtsman from the East Coast, preferred a luxury yacht on a human scale that was capable of exploring smaller inlets and ports. Arcadia's first trip took the family on a cruise to Scandinavia for a spot of iceberg watching. An aluminium hull reduces friction, increases fuel economy, and is less brittle in Polar temperatures.

The Hirondelle was Prince Albert's first serious yacht (he had previously owned a small cutter Isabelle II). In 1875, he converted Hirondelle from pleasure yacht to explorer yacht with on-board lab to examine specimens and map the sea floor. Thus started his life-long passion for oceanography…
