Safran was originally built for Ellen MacArthur as Kingfisher. Sailing single handedly she came second in the Vendee Globe 2000-1, then with Nick Maloney first in the EDS Atlantic Challenge 2001. Latest Route du Rhum skipper Marc Guillemot has now handed Safran back to the MacArthur team as he awaits delivery of a new, lighter Safran.

Eric Tabarly won the 1976 Transatlantic in the all-aluminium ketch Penduick VI. Now it's used mostly for training in St Malo. Pen Duick means Black Head, the Breton name for the Coal Tit.

Owner: Prince Albert I, Albert Grimaldi of Monaco (1848 - 1922)
Hirondelle II was Albert's fourth and final explorer ship which he had built in 1911. His fastest and largest ship, it was even equipped with wireless telegraph. Whenever the Prince spent time in Monaco during WWI he stayed on board the yacht in the harbour! After the war, the ship stayed in Monaco to the Prince's death in 1922.
