It is currently in St Barths for the holiday season.

The new Alinghi 5 was flown down to Genoa from Geneva (over the Alps?!), suspended beneath a helicopter, after initial tests on Lac Leman. This shot was taken by Leandro at the Amico yard soon after it arrived. That's Azzurra II in front and Cuor di Leone behind.

As it stands, the 33rd America's Cup will see Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi team (Société Nautique de Genève) challenged by Larry Ellison's BMW Oracle team (Golden Gate Yacht Club) off the East coast of Australia in February 2010. Alinghi will be sailing their 90 ft sloop-rigged catamaran and Oracle sailing a similar-sized trimaran, BMW Oracle Racing 90.

Controversially, Alinghi's winches are electrically powered.

Given the insane amount of legal manoeuvring that has characterized this race, one can only assume the legal challenges are not yet over.

Many of the yachts which previously might have moored offshore during the Monaco Yacht Show will this year be relocated to St Jean.

Brokers found the bad weather last year made it very difficult to for them to shuttle clients out to their yachts.

So they are staging a concurrent event entitled The MYBA Selection.

It runs from 25th to 27th September 2009 and will include yachts such as the 26m motor yacht Catriel, the 75 m SY Phocea and 57m SY Montigne from Aegean Yachts.

Monday: The Monaco Yacht Show is fast approaching. The port is half full already.

The show runs from the 23rd to 26th September 2009 - opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.

There are 100 yachts on display in Port Hercule, from 25 to 90 metres, with 40 new builds.

There are stands for 500 companies in yacht-related businesses - including everything from paint finishes to table settings.

Kalizma is the yacht that Richard Burton bought for Elizabeth Taylor and renamed after their three children Kate, Liza and Marie.

Following her refit and extra top deck, she has recently cruised in South East Asia, from Phuket to Hong Kong via Sarawak and Sabah.

Czeers Mk 1 - Solar Powered Boat

This solar-powered speedboat prototype was the subject of great interest at the 2008 Monaco Yacht Show, with soaring oil prices in the forefront of people's minds.

The two questions asked were a) does it really work and b) how much does it cost?

The answer to the first question was most definitely yes. It can run at 30 knots, powered solely by its solar-powered, lightweight - and silent - 80 kw electric motor. 14 square metres of flush-mounted photovoltaic cells cover its upper surface, which either charge the battery or can power the engine directly for cruising at 8 knots. The boat is made from carbon-fibre and weighs only 1000 kg.

At full speed the Czeers Mk1 can run for 30 minutes, but at 10 knots autonomy is much longer.

David and Nils started on this project in 2005 at Delft University. Spurred on by a win in solar-powered boat competition, they went on to form the Czeers company together, while still in their early twenties, with David in charge of design and Nils running the management side of things.

With the help of prestigious partners like Royal Huisman, they built the Czeers Mk1 prototype, billed as the world's first solar-powered speedboat.

The second question, how much does it cost, went unanswered. David would only say that it's a prototype and therefore not for sale!

Yacht Tenders

In addition to superyachts, the Monaco Yacht Show also puts on a good show in the tender department. There are usually about a dozen exhibiting tender manufacturers, but all the yachts moored in the bay also send their tenders in and out of the port to collect guests, brokers and clients, and many other small boats visit from the Cannes Boat Show.

Although any craft can be used as a tender, a few different styles predominate, with many of the larger yachts having a variety of different boats for different occasions. A wooden tender, such an antique Riva from the sixties, always expresses a great sense of style. SY Mitseaah, for example, has a Riva Junior. Now that Riva no longer make wooden boats, many other manufacturers produce retro-looking models, such as Swedish-based J Craft, although modern materials are used for the hull.

In the wooden category, Serenella hand-crafted Venetian limousines - used as water taxis in Venice - are both elegant and protect guests from the elements.

Using more modern materials, but still with a traditional look, US builders Hinckley and Chris Craft produce a wide variety of runabouts.

The very large yachts will often have one or two Australian-built Vikal limo or "semi-limos" on board. Danish-based Royal Tender, has also entered the enclosed limo market recently.

RIBs, short for Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boats, are the easiest sort of boat to handle for crew, as there is minimal danger of damaging the all important paintwork on the yacht, or indeed scuffing the tender itself on the quayside. They have a rigid hull surrounded by an inflatable rubber sponson or tube. Novurania are popular general-purpose tenders in this category, and Italian-based Dariel have some very elegant designs too.

Although most yacht tender manufacturers are able to provide a great deal of customisation for their clients, some yachts have one-off tenders that often match the design of the yacht. The Philippe Starck designed Vaudrey Miller tenders to A, and Espen Øino's Moon Goddess spring to mind, although the latter is really a yacht in its own right, and carries a tender of its own!

In a wider use of the word, any vehicle, craft, or aircraft can be termed a tender if it carries passengers or goods to or from the main yacht - many of the larger yachts carry helicopters for longer journeys in remote locations, while some yachts carry cars on board.

Leandro spotted Mates, Italian footballer Roberto Mancini's new custom-made sports yacht, in the waters of Caprera Island.

Kifaru, which means Rhinoceros in Swahili, is a new Italian yacht company, founded in 2008, as a collaboration between the Sarti family, who were behind Tecnomar until 2008, and Roberto Mancini, the well-known Italian footballer and coach.

An earlier collaboration led to the Velvet 35 model for Tecnomar. This model, the Askari 63, designed by Luca Dini and launched in June, is the first yacht to be built by Kifaru. Larger photos to follow …

The return of Lance Armstrong to the Tour with Astana, after a four year absence, is the story dominating the French news.

Here he is hurtling up Boulevard du Jardin Exotique on the Stage 1 time trial. He put in a respectable performance, finishing 10th fastest. Cancellara, Contador and Bradley Wiggins were 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

The French TV commentator begrudgingly conceded that Lance looks like he is still a force to be reckoned with!

Whatever the establishment may think, the public are well behind him. Everywhere he goes he is preceded by cheering crowds and followed by a large press pack.

Tour de France Monaco Grand Depart

Teams, TV crews and the whole Tour de France shebang have been streaming into the principality this week in the build up to the Grand Depart of the Tour de France, which this year starts in Monaco, this Saturday, 4th July 2009.

We crossed the Cofidis team near Sainte Agnes on Thursday afternoon. Incredibly in the near 30 degree heat, having climbed 950 metres from Monaco, the team looked very relaxed, hadn't broken a sweat, were chatting merrily and said hello as they passed !

Two to three hundred thousand people are expected to visit Monaco for the event. There are a few new yachts around. The recently launched CRN Tacanuyaso MS is berthed under Fort Antoine. Al Mirqab and A have been sailing along the coast nearby.

The route for Saturday's Monaco-Monaco 15 km Stage 1 is: Port, Casino, Princess Charlotte, Jardin Exotique, back above Monaco along Moyenne Corniche to Bon Voyage, down past Tennis, Larvotto, back to Port.

The first rider leaves at 4 pm on this time trial and is expected to take 20 minutes to complete the circuit. Cyclists then leave every minute until 7 pm. The "Caravan" (free key-rings etc) leaves at 1.30 p.m. *

*These times are taken from the official Tour de France website, but it seems they have started a little earlier than scheduled…

Sunday's Stage 2 is much longer: 187 km Monaco - Brignoles, via Nice, Grasse, Fayence and Draguignan, starting at 12.20 in the Place du Casino.

This old tall ship looked magnificent as she cruised towards Port Hercule. Eagle was originally commissioned as a training ship for the Reichsmarine by none other than Adolf Hitler himself, but taken over by the US at the end of the war. Unfortunately she needed a little help from the Monaco tugs to continue on her way.

She is only one of two commissioned sailing ships in active service for the US government, the other being the USS Constitution. She is now used as a training ship for US Coast Guard officer cadets.

The International Hydrographic Bureau has its HQ in Port Hercule, just above the Stars and Bars restaurant, and so Monaco hosts the International Hydrographic Conference. This year's conference, finishing today (5 June 2009), has brought the US and Russian hydrographic vessels, Henson and Donuzlav (foreground), to the principality. Behind them can be seen Atlantis II and Lady Moura.

There was a good turnout for this year's Grand Prix. Stands seemed full and many yachts turned up for the event, despite the credit crisis. Although there seemed fewer sponsored charter parties than last year.

One car manufacturer had apparently downsized from a 115 metre yacht to one a quarter of the size. Conspicuous by its absence was any sign of Roman Abramovich's fleet. But some regulars like Rahal and Kogo were not going to miss the fun.

Nice Airport, which is usually heaving with Cannes-bound Parisian party people, seemed eerily quiet mid-week. Some usually highly-coveted apartments overlooking the track, which can be let out by locals for five figure sums for the weekend (paying several months' rent!), went unbooked …

NT spotted the Queen's cousin, Prince Michael of Kent, who later presented the cup to Jenson Button, hopping off to Blue Bird in Talitha's Chris Craft tender with Nick Edmiston before the race. Blue Bird and the Talitha tender flew the White Ensign. KH glimpsed Prince Albert being ushered onto one of the yachts on Saturday night. Dilbar visited on Thursday but departed before the race.

Utopia, Nero, Talitha, Aviva, Princess Mariana, Siren, Siran and Fortunate Sun dominated the skyline outside the port. Inside the port Indian Empress, Ronin, Lionheart, Addiction, Annaeva, Kogo, Phoenix and Alfa Nero were some of the big yachts moored on the jetties. The Hugo Boss 20m Open 60, usually skippered by Alex Thomson, was zipping around below the Oceanographic Museum. Larger photos here.

Jenson Button got the green light in the Brawn diffuser row on Wednesday… If you haven't been following this year's F1 Grand Prix, here's an armchair recap of what is turning out to be a very exciting season.

Last year the FIA, Formula One's ruling body, changed many of the strict rules defining specs for Formula One cars. The intention was to promote overtaking, the lack of which has long been recognised as a major turn-off for TV audiences. After all, nothing more boring than seeing cars finish in the same order as they started in.

They further capped the power of engines, tyres reverted to slicks, and they changed various regulations which apply to the all-important aerodynamics of cars. The intention was to improve grip on corners, slow the cars down a little, and reduce turbulence, which had made cars difficult to approach and therefore overtake. However the new specifications proved open to interpretation …

Meanwhile, with the credit crunch hitting the car industry, Honda GP was bought out (for one pound!) by its Mancunian team principal Ross Brawn, who had steered Ferrari to victory, as former Technical Director, throughout the great Schumacher era.

Brawn GP, as Honda was now known, developed a powerful split-level diffuser in 2008. The diffuser is the rear stabiliser which increases downward pressure, grip, and, therefore, speed. It is sometimes said that a Formula One car should be able to drive upside down on the ceiling, because at full speed the downforce produced by its aerodynamics is equal to about 2.5 times the weight of the car.

Williams and Toyota produced similar diffusers but the big names that have dominated F1 for many years - Ferrari, McLaren, BMW and Renault - did not, and they duly lodged complaints against Brawn after the first Grand Prix of the season in Australia, which was won by Jenson Button in his fast Brawn car.

However, Brawn's diffuser was deemed legal, so then there was an appeal against the decision, meanwhile Button won a second GP in Malaysia, and finally the appeal was rejected this week, with the result that Button's victories will hold. McLaren, Ferrari and BMW will now be scrambling to develop similar diffusers, but this will take time, and money…

Talented wunderkind Sebastien Vettel is on pole for tomorrow's Chinese Grand Prix in a first for Red Bull, but Button stands a good chance of quickly moving up the pack from current 5th position, as he has more fuel onboard and thus will only pit later … The Chinese GP will be followed by Bahrain, then Barcelona, then Monaco on the 24th May.

This mini cruise ship has recently been sold by Ocean Independence. Hebridean, the former operator, announced March 2009 that it was pulling out of the international cruise market, due to financial conditions. Booked cruises are being refunded or transferred to their second ship Hebridean Princess.

According to Wikipedia Hebridean Spirit it is one of the Renaissance class ships - but it certainly looks very unlike the other ones.

The cruise ship MSC Melody, run by Italian operator MSC, successfully fought off a pirate attack in the Indian Ocean on Saturday night, 25th April 2009. According to an AP report, onboard Israeli private security forces thwarted the pirates by returning fire after the ship was attacked with automatic weapons as pirates try to board.

The attack took place about 200 miles north of the Seychelles, as Melody was returning to Genoa from a cruise in South Africa. About 1000 passengers were on board, no-one was hurt although the liner was slightly damaged.

Until now it has been unusual for civilian ships to exchange fire with pirates. Perhaps this marks the start of a new trend of preventative action… MSC Melody is a regular visitor to Port Hercule in Monaco, as can be seen in the above photos, and often displays a large sign: "For Security Reasons Do Not Approach Closer Than 50 Metres Unless Authorised."

These aerial water bombers, or simply Canadairs, as they are known locally, were practising in Beaulieu today - a sure sign that the weather is starting to heat up.

Canadair flying boats are a familiar sight during the summer along the Côte d'Azur, where mountain fires break out regularly. The heavy drone of their engines can be heard for miles.

The amphibious aircraft scoop up water from the sea while skimming over the water. It takes 12 seconds flying at 70 knots to fill up a full 6000 litre load. In the US the planes are known as Super Scoopers.

The French Sécurité Civile operates 12 of these planes as well as 2 Bombardier Dash 8s and 9 Conair Turbo Firecats (ref Wikipedia).

The sound of beer cans being cracked open must have been deafening … as Australian driver Mark Webber finally came good, pulling off second place in the Shanghai Grand Prix, his highest F1 finish ever, behind Red Bull team-mate Sebastien Vettel.

He will be pleased with his comeback after breaking a leg in November in a cycling accident. The Adrian Newey designed Red Bull Renault performed extremely well in the rain and will be faster still when they add a split level diffuser to the car. Australians are now hoping that Webber will be the first countryman to take the chequered flag since Alan Jones in 1981.

"We've got Monaco, baby" - Jenson Button's words over the Brawn GP radio as he and team-mate Rubens Barrichello strolled home in first and second place yesterday.

In a tactical gamble, Brawn were the only team to start with super-soft tyres, which gave them an early lead, but were liable to deteriorate faster than harder tyres.

Meanwhile, last year's winner Lewis Hamilton had a bad race, starting at the back of the grid after crashing in qualifying. Ferrari showed potential picking up third and fourth.

Button's only mistake was to park in the wrong place in the pits after winning the race, so he ran back along the track to the podium, to great applause from both the crowd and rival crews.

Here's a digest of a few items of news that have caught my eye recently.

Sardinia's luxury tax on yachts may be scrapped. Italy plans to ban yachts from mooring offshore, to protect the marine environment from anchor damage.

Shari Arison, Israel's richest woman, has put My Shanti up for sale, listed at $103 million. My Shanti is in Monaco currently. Thyssen Krupp may be selling Hellenic Shipyards.

The yacht market has taken quite a hit in the credit crunch. Inventories have risen and prices have fallen, but buyers and sellers are still doing business.

Lara was sold by Ardell (BOGOF - buy one get one free). Burgess lopped a whopping $6 million off Multiple's asking price, now $19 m. Gale Winds, a 26m Broward, was sold. Hebridean Spirit, a 90m mini cruiser, was sold by Ocean Independence.

Lone Ranger was donated to a US charitable foundation for oceanographic exploration. There was a $2.5 million price drop for My Issue and 15 more sales in March including Bad Girl, 57m, Casino Royale, 50m and Stanley, the 120 ft Palmer Johnson at IYC.

Armani has dropped the price on Mariu by €4 million to €20 m. The explorer Garfield's price dropped by $4 million to $11 m. Skylge was reduced from €15m to €10. Lady Christina is now for sale at €52 m. All these and many more "bargains" to be found at Malcolm McLean's excellent brokerage news site.

According to Camper & Nicholson's newsletter the number of yachts on sale over 24 metres nearly doubled in 2008, from 1000 to 1750, while yacht prices dropped a fairly modest 15%, those longer on the market moving more in price, with the greatest reductions coming in January 2009.

85m Vibrant Curiosity was launched by Oceanco for German screw manufacturer, Reinhold Würth. Benetti launched 64m Silver Angel and 45m Harmony III. Stabbert is converting 308 ft Sahara.

Royal Huisman has launched Hanuman, the J-class replica of Endeavour II. CMN launched 60m Slipstream. Rodriquez launched Ocean Emerald, the first Yacht Plus fractional ownership yacht, designed by Foster and Partners. Maiora launched 39m Why Worry. Baglietto launched Natori, 41m. Amels launched their fifth LE 171. Feadship launched #667 Hurricane Run, and High Chaparral has been put up for sale.

The world seems to be waking up to the fact that paying multi-million dollar ransoms in the Gulf of Aden is likely to be fuelling piracy by giving pirates the means to buy faster boats and more sophisticated equipment.

On a sad note, 28-year-old Florent Lemacon's dream of sailing around the world with his family ended last week, when he was killed as French forces stormed their 41-foot hijacked sailing yacht Tanit. His wife and child were freed with another couple.

Last September another French couple on board their 48 footer the Carré d'As were freed unharmed in a similar hijack rescue. On that occasion the couple locked themselves into a small room when the boat was stormed - a wise move.

More sad news - in March, a British man Malcolm Robertson was killed in a ghastly attack by pirates off the Thai coast whilst on board with his wife. Their blog details their round the world trip which started in 1998 in Eastbourne.

Meanwhile, things ended well for America's new hero Captain Richard Phillips, who was freed yesterday from his own Somali pirate hostage ordeal. Vice Admiral William Gortney's poignant message to the captain's wife was "Mrs Phillips keep your son away from those Easter eggs, his Dad's headed home."

Here are the first shots of the launch of the new Wally 130 this week in Fano, Italy. This high performance yacht combines a water ballast with a trim-tab keel, for greater safety and performance. The 11 ton water ballast improves stability of this 84-ton boat while the 6 metre keel (which can be raised to 4 metres for port and bay access) improves lift.

The sloop will now be towed to Ancona to have the keel installed - the stepping of the mast is scheduled for May.

Should be on display at this year's Monaco Yacht Show.

Bull, the yacht of convicted Ponzi fraudster Bernie Madoff, was seized by bailiffs on the 3rd of April, in Port Gallice, Cap d'Antibes - he also has a small property nearby.

The propellors have been chained and a notice of seizure [is this a boat arrest ?] has been served by bailiffs acting on instruction from a Parisian-based financial company. The yachts are back! Here's DYT's mighty yacht carrier Super Servant 4, recently arrived in Mallorca from Port Everglades, with its 120 million dollar cargo, which is returning to the Med for cruising and charter bookings at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

DYT carriers "sink" to manoeuvre yachts on and off - this float on float off system alleviates the need for lifting equipment and reduces strains on hulls. Slightly smaller at 139 metres, but also semi-submersible, Super Servant 3 recently left Port Everglades, Florida, for Toulon, France, via the Caribbean. Happy Christmas and here's wishing you a great 2009 !

2008 was the best of years … and the worst of years. It started with a bang, with the launch of two exciting reverse bow designs, A and Predator. Following on in the spring came the superb 133m Al Mirqab, one of the largest yachts ever built.

Smaller production-series yacht builders continued their expansion into the higher-end segment, with 35 and 50 metre models. Here they competed with the larger traditionally one-off yacht builders, many of whom are also now producing similar-sized series.

But then, somewhere around the middle of the year, it all went pear-shaped. The world economy started to feel the tightening grip of the credit crunch, and the yacht industry was not immune. Iceland went bust, the Russian stock market fell by 70%, and the rest of the world fared not much better. The price of oil fell from $150 to $35 a barrel. Bulk shipping rates fell from over $200,000 to under $10,000 a day. Some operators were prompted to stop using their ships for transport and start using them as off-shore storage facilities.

Banks folded or were nationalised, en masse around the world, commercial lending came to a nearly complete halt at one point. And, as you surely know, the main solution currently on offer to all the world's woes appears to be a massive subsidization of the car industry. Opinions differ as to the extent of the forthcoming downturn but right now it certainly looks like we're up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

2008 saw an end to yacht flipping, the process by which buyer A sells his slot for a yacht under construction, at a premium, to buyer B, who doesn't want to wait two or three years for delivery, while buyer A moves his order two or three years down the line.

There have been reports of some yacht prices dropping by up to 50% in the last three months, in one instance a seller knocking a cool six million dollars off the asking price. There has been the inevitable talk of repossessions, which begs the question, if banks have no use for repossessed houses, what possible use is a repossessed yacht?

But what does the future hold? Despite all the gloom and doom, there are mixed signals. France has not yet entered recession officially. And, extraordinary as it may seem to US and UK readers, new residential construction is still being started in Monaco, with houses being pulled down to make way for a series of new residential apartment blocks. That having been said, I heard recently that the ambitious "Monaco Island" project - an offshore luxury Dubai-style residential complex - may well now have been shelved.

Yacht brokers are reporting sales, so there are evidently still buyers out there with new yachts being ordered and built. Many large yachts are under construction and nearing completion. 2009 should see the launch of Luna, a 115m explorer being built in Germany. But the highlight of year may well be Roman Abramovich's Eclipse, at 162m, not just the largest of his fleet, but the largest yacht ever built.

Following on from Andrei Melnichenko's "A" launched earlier this year, might CII herald a rush by prospective yacht owners to snap up the remaining 24 letters of the alphabet?

Klaus has just sent in shots of Abeking & Rasmussen's latest launch getting her finishing touches in Lemwerder.

Although a sister to Eminence, the exterior styling seems less curvy, with the characteristic Reymond Langton "darts" or "arrowheads" almost absent.

There is an interesting transparent enclosure on the sun deck in front of the mast - possibly a lift (elevator)?

3 Dec 2008: I'm testing out a new Google social gadget called Friend Connect (GFC). It's still in beta so I'm kind of curious to see how it will work. You can login with your Google, Orkut, Facebook, MySpace or Yahoo ID.

The advantage is that you can use pre-existing IDs and your data is in the safe hands of Google. I guess if you prefer to have multiple personalities on the web then you can always create a new login. Feel free to give it a spin, leave a comment etc.

8 Dec 2008: having tested out GFC for a few days, I don't think it's yet possible to upload photos or create links, though you can embed Youtube videos. So I'm going to leave it on this page for testing until it gets a few more features. If Google develop it further, I might use it to replace the current comment system in time.

9 Dec 2008: It seems everyone is rushing out new commenting platforms this month. As well as new platforms from Google and Facebook, JS-Kit have also started to migrate their Haloscan database, which monacoeye uses. As of today, you should start to see a new format for comments, with a lot more functionality. Old comments will be upgraded in the next few weeks.

You can use the same login across all JS-Kit enabled sites (it's very widely used). Very much like GFC you can create a profile with JS-Kit which will give you access to all your comments across many sites.

Andreas Liveras

Today I heard the shocking news that Andreas Liveras had been killed in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. He was visiting the Taj Palace for a curry and actually phoned the BBC during the sickening ordeal:

"As soon as we sat at the table we heard the machine gun fire outside in the corridor."

Mr Liveras was known to all in the yachting world as a warm and charismatic leader in the luxury charter market.

He was gifted in business, starting his career as a bakery delivery-man, having arrived in London from Cyprus as a young man, and eventually going on to own the bakery, which he then sold to Express Dairies.

He went on to make a business from his passion for yachts, buying a series of yachts, refitting them, chartering and eventually custom building. Liveras Yachts currently operates Alysia and Lauren L.

He will be greatly missed - our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

Update - 4 August 2009: Mary has just sent in photos of the wreck of the helicopter, taken yesterday. You get a good view of the sturdy inflatable buoys which kept the craft from sinking and allowed the helicopter to be towed so easily.

The main rotor is unseated and the rotor blades and engine casing are very beaten up, the pilot's door is missing, but the cabin of the helicopter looks remarkably unscathed.

Those are lobster pots in the background, in case you were wondering…

According to press reports, Scottish peer Lord Irvine Laidlaw, 66, who owns Lady Christine, was at the controls of the helicopter when it crashed. He was picking up passengers and returning to the yacht.

Breaking news - 2 Aug 2009: Lady Christine's helicopter tender, the one pictured above with personalised registration M-Boat, has crashed in the water in Maine, USA, yesterday afternoon, 1st August 2009.

The accident happened near Little Deer Isle in Penobscot Bay, Maine. The helicopter took off with four people on board, including owner Lord Laidlaw at the controls, from Lady Christine, which was anchored at sea. The four got out safely after the crash and waded ashore to the island. One eye-witness said that after seeing the helicopter spin down fast into the water she was amazed that anyone got out alive.

A spinning helicopter is often a sign of a rear rotor malfunction.

A small boat was sent out from the Lady Christine to collect the four passengers and return them to the yacht.

Fortunately, no-one appears to be seriously hurt. One person was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for a neck injury, but the injury was not considered serious.

"Salty Hebrew" left this eye-witness report on monacoeye.com below:

"I am a watchstander on the Training Ship State of Maine. Lady Christine pulled into Castine Harbor in Maine today. I watched her Heli tender take off as I was monitoring VHF Marine CH 16. 10 minutes after her takeoff, I witnessed a call to the USCG reporting that the heli tender went down in the water of a cove near Little Deer Isle, ME.....so.....Lady Christine is now missing her Heli =( as of Aug. 1st, 2009. "

The helicopter has now been towed to shore by the coastguard and the Environmental Protection Department are looking into containment methods for any resultant pollution that may exist. Photo here. About 30 gallons of fuel were on board when it crash-landed.

Saturday update: Anastasia and Oasis under the casino, with the two CRNs Maraya and Romance behind. Out at sea Stargate and Alfa Nero stand out. That's Xanadu, the new Andrew Winch designed Benetti, behind Alfa Nero. At night, the underwater lighting systems put on quite a show…

Thursday Update: Beautiful weather today - all the boats are safely in the port with a few dozen offshore, including Alfa Nero and Stargate. An excellent day for visiting the show … ! The Red Arrows caught everyone by surprise, captured below by NT.

Tuesday Update: There were extraordinary scenes in Port Hercule today as three yachts found themselves in difficulty while trying to pull into their berths for the yacht show due to very strong winds. Photos below …

First the handsome new 53 m Vinydrea tried to squeeze into an impossibly small gap between Martha Ann and another medium sized yacht in very strong winds. Each time she approached the yacht she swung round 90 degrees from the force of the wind, with her side thrusters seemingly on full power. Having come perilously close to many of the other yachts surrounding her in the crowded port, she eventually gave up on that space, and opted for a larger space on the other side.

Meanwhile Harle was following from behind. Also unable to hold her position, she seemed to be blown very close to a ferry moored on the large jetty, before abandoning her attempt and beating a hasty retreat into the open water.

A little later Macalulu tried to enter the port, obviously tired of being buffeted by the strong winds out at sea. She seemed to be able to hold her course until a strong wind picked up as she entered the port and she ended up with one anchor stuck round the wrong side of her bow. She was thus also forced back out to open sea … !

The wind has dropped a little now, but the skies are still overcast…

Sunday Update: The Yacht Show preliminaries started on Saturday, with yachts taking their places on the central T jetty and most regular residents vacating their places on the Quai des Etats Unis.

Weather terrible - black skies and rain - let's hope it clears up when it all kicks off on Wednesday. With credit markets frozen and worldwide financial gloom and doom will anyone be buying yachts this week ?

The 2008 Monaco Yacht Show runs from Wednesday 24th to 27th of September 2008.

Many yachts changed their hull colours from white to blue this year. But 007, the (prototype?) Vespucci 555 from CITM (thx Vittorio) is keeping one step ahead with a continually changing colour scheme: blue, purple and pink. Nine further yachts are planned.

You've seen this trick before with Roberto Cavalli's RC… The paint effect is ChromaFlair from JDSU and is the same colour shift effect used in many applications - from cars to furnishings (thx Darren). No pigment is used, the effect is achieved through refraction.

July 2009: Our first views of Lord Norman Foster's Ocean Emerald cruising, when it visited Monaco last week. She seemed to move at a fair lick and looked very streamlined and stable in the water.

At this time of year hundreds of thousands of Brits, and other nationalities, will be heading for the popular Provence area of France for their summer holidays.

On Monday, 7th July 2008, 74 kg of untreated uranium leaked out of the Tricastin nuclear waste treatment centre, run by Socatri, in Bollene, in the Vaucluse region. It spread into the ground and surrounding water system, according to press releases by parent company Areva.

Swimming, water sports and crop irrigation have been officially banned. The uranium has been detected in the local rivers. Local residents have been instructed not to drink water or eat fish from nearby rivers.

According to reports, the spill occurred when uranium overflowed into a spill tank, but the spill tank had a leak because repair work was being carried out on it.

Abnormal levels of radiation have been detected in several rivers and lakes. The 74 kg of uranium was in the form of 6.26 cubic metres (or 30 cubic metres in an early Areva press release) of liquid containing 12 grammes of uranium per litre.

Internet coverage of the incident seems sketchy at best - although the story is getting a lot of play on local radio. Most French articles seem to stress the fact that radiation levels are dropping rapidly.

The French authorities have now ordered the temporary closure of the Tricastin facility.

The best article I have found is this Yahoo report. Here is the ASN report from the 11th of July (in French), which says very little, other than they have classed the incident as Level 1 (of 7) - the least serious level. Here's a map of the facility, the live.com map, the Vaucluse local government site, with their drinking and bathing advice (in French), and the official Areva press releases.

The guest list for the christening of recently launched Guilty reads like a Who's Who of the contemporary art world. Nicholas Serota of the Tate, Jeffrey Deitch, Larry Gagosian, Marian Goodman, Maurizio Cattelan, Ashley Bickerton … the list goes on, and on.

Of course, Sarah Morris' text painting "Guilty" hangs on the wall of one bedroom - bought after the yacht was named. Owner and major art collector Dakis Joannou simply had to have it!

The exterior design was created by international art star Jeff Koons, famous for his basketball in perspex case, three-storey high "Puppy" made of flowers, and the "Made in Heaven" erotic series of photographs with Italian ex-wife and porn-star-member-of-parliament La Cicciolina.

Although the blown up print and poster colours will be familiar to art fans from Roy Liechtenstein's signature Ben-Day Dots style, Jeff Koons actually based this design on the Dazzle Painting, or Razzle Dazzle as the Americans called it, WW1 camouflage pattern invented by British marine artist and naval officer Norman Wilkinson - see comments below for more on this extraordinary style.

Ivana Porfiri created the unusual angular architecture. Guilty is likely to appear in next month's Italian Vogue.
