MTU 4000
This is the new MTU 4000 engine unveiled at the show last week. This 20 cylinder model produces up to 4,300 KW or 5,795 bhp rated power. As a replacement for the older 16 cylinder 595 series, it should deliver 10% greater fuel efficiency, while the 12 and 16 cylinder models also benefit from over 25% more power per cylinder.
The new engine is also slightly smaller - about half a metre lower - and about one tonne lighter. Though at just under 12 tonnes, if it fell on your foot, I don't believe you would notice the difference. Dimensions are 3.9 x 1.5 x 2.4 m. The new 4000 series is also cleaner than its predecessors and has improved turbocharger technology.
MTU seems to be the current market leader as engine supplier to large yachts.

Monaco Yacht Show 2007
19 Sep 2007 19:42 :MYS 2007
Sunday: Another yacht show is over - most of the
boats left today as quickly as they arrived. Photos
to follow over the next week.
Saturday: Saint Nicolas and Sanssouci Star joined the party last night … I've started uploading larger photos
Friday: OK here's the first big photo of the show. If anyone can name all 70 odd yachts moored offshore in the shot I'll add the names to the photo…
Thursday 7 pm: Another exhausting day at the yacht show ! I can't believe Monaco has ever been this busy. All car parks (and there are many) were full.
At one point, I was nearly jostled into the water by a pack of paparazzi, pursued by a pack of security guards in smart flannel suits. It was Prince Albert heading off for a tour of Alfa Nero. He sportingly posed for photos on deck with his host. To all those wondering where the large photos are - they will be coming soon !!
Thursday 10 am: The Nice Matin confirmed the mystery plane crash story in this morning's paper - see comment below for details.
Another clear blue sky for the show today. Major surprises so far were that Sarafsa and Lady Anne were on display. Alfa Nero is naturally getting the most attention.
Al Yamamah, the yacht originally intended for Saddam Hussein, was off-shore. I was told this was her first visit for over a decade.
Wednesday 7 pm: Just back from the show - I was told that a light aircraft went down in the sea this morning. No idea of casualties. This is completely unconfirmed…
Wednesday 11.30 am: Just seen this, a few hundred yards off-shore, from my balcony, many small craft converging around the smoke. A flare?
Wednesday: The port is now completely full. A little patience will be required until I get all the links and larger photos up and running !! Once all the smaller photos are up the larger ones will follow …
Monday: Most yachts have now arrived, including Alfa Nero, GiVi and Boadicea.
Sunday: The Monaco Yacht Show is revving up for the big opening on Wednesday - crews are busy scrubbing decks and suppliers uncrating deliveries for the boats and stands.
Half of the yachts arrived over the weekend - see below and here - squeezing past the classic yachts, who left on their final regatta to Nice, on Sunday.
The big guns, such as Alfa Nero, have yet to arrive in Port Hercule, but have been spotted in neighbouring ports.
This year the yacht show is able to use the full width of the central T jetty, for the first time, as all "local" yachts such as Lady Moura, Wedge Too and Sokar have moved over to the new port extension. So, it looks like this year's show is going to be even bigger than last year's.
The list of motor yachts exhibited can be found here.

The first fruit of the collaboration, Project Midas, started steel cutting in July at the Nanhua High Speed Engineering facility. Built to Lloyds specifications and MCA compliant, the 68 metre Leviathan will be delivered in autumn 2009.
Models and plans of a range of Leviathan Yachts will be on display at Cavendish White's stand no: TQT17 during the show. Project Midas has a price tag of $53,000,000.
The plan above indicates a 67 m length and the name M/Y Casino Royale and then Millenium (on the yacht itself). Possibly simply for illustrative purposes.

Yachts
Monaco hosts a biannual Classic Yacht event, before every other Monaco Yacht Show. This year it will take place again, and starts tomorrow 10th September, finishing on Sunday 16th September.
Three broad classes are represented:
• Classic sailing yachts, from 20 to 60 m in length, both racers and cruisers. These masterpieces of wood and brass invariably have fascinating stories to tell of inspired designers, famous races, illustrious owners, or miraculous restorations.
• Classic motor yachts, from 25 to 70 m in length. Look out for the yellow funnels.
• Classic runarounds and racers, less than 16 m in length.
Placements and inspections are from Monday to Wednesday. Regularity tests and regattas run from Thursday to Sunday.
Christina O and SS Delphine, a little big for the classes but joining in anyway, have already arrived. SS Delphine will be hosting the Nuit du Yachting "Sea Personality" Gala Award Ceremony on Friday 14th.
2005 attendees included Atlantide and Over the Rainbow in the motor section, and Creole and Shamrock in the sail class. R/S Eden ex Fulmara, pictured above arriving with Christina O this evening, will certainly garner some attention this year, given the scale and ambition of her redesign.
If you can't make Classic Week, you get a second chance to catch up with most of the sailing boats at the Voiles de Saint Tropez, which starts on the 1st of October.

Length: 167 ft 3 • 51 m
Year: 1930
Builder: Defoe Boat
Architect: John H Wells
Refit: Rainsford Saunders Design
Janidore was built in 1930 by Defoe in Michigan, with an original length of 142 ft. In 1966, as Niki I, she was rebuilt by Merril Stevens and lengthened with a swept stern. In 2006 she was given a completely new 1930s restyling by RSD and Axel Vervoordt in Turkey and lengthened again at the bow. The result is a far more elegant yacht which successfully evokes a bygone era.
