December 2006

Monacoeye followed the yachts in December, turning its gaze southwards, largely due to the sterling work of Robert Paylor, our correspondent stationed in St Barths, in the French Carribean.

As well as sending in some of his back catalogue, Bob kept track of comings and goings around the port of Gustavia during the month of December. Big hitters included Rising Sun, Limitless, Lone Ranger and Amazon Express. Many other spottings have simply been posted in the comments sections of the relevant yacht page – one recent arrival was LGB, for example.

Then there were the recent launches: Linda Lou, JeMaSa, Happy Days, April Fool, Kaleen, Barchetta and Rosehearty, Rupert Murdoch’s new sailing boat.

There were also a few name changes: Serena M, ex Christine, now sports a blue sat mast, Continental Drifter III, is the new name for the Delta Marine Defiant, and Allegria, is the new name for Flamingo Daze.

And dozens of new entries were added, including Battered Bull, Arm's Reach, Tooth Fairy, Fighting Irish, Blind Date, Azure Leisure, Sunrise, Shergar, Kingfisher, Impetuous, Summerwind, Charisma, Contrarian, and Renalo.

But there was more. Dainis Kivlenieks in Western Australia took some nice shots of the trimaran motor yacht White Rabbit in Fremantle. He sent in some shots of the Danish royal yacht Dannebrog taken on holiday in August and had yachtspotters around the world scratching their heads over the identity of Nisor. Most recently he spotted the Heesen A Khaliq in Fremantle.

And there was more. Stelios Dritsas sent in some recent photos of Dubai in Jebel Ali with its engines running. While owner Sheikh Mohammed made the headlines in the UK with a bid for Liverpool FC.

Finally, I processed some of the tenders seen at the Monaco Yacht Show and made a start with some yachts seen at the St Tropez regatta. Included in the latter were a few deck shots of Lulworth, which many considered the restoration of 2006. The four explorer yachts of Prince Albert I were also posted. I was surprised to learn that Albert used to sleep aboard Hirondelle II in Port Hercule, when in Monaco during WWI - he even had a wireless telephone installed. All this and more can be found in the November and December archives…

A busy end for a busy year. A big thanks to all the contributors who sent in pictures, emails and left comments in 2006 – here’s hoping for more of the same in 2007. Happy New Year !!
